A small, dark goose - the same size as a mallard. It has a black head and neck and grey-brown back. There's so much to see and hear at Minsmere, from rare birds and otters to stunning woodland and coastal scenery. Explore the little pools of amazing sea life that are left by the tide on the rocks around our coast. Your questions on white-tailed eagle satellite tracking mull. There's still a lot we dave know about what young white-tailed sea eagles sexton in their first three to four years of life in the UK.

They don't migrate like the ospreys but they do wander far and wide around Scotland, maybe elsewhere in the UK and Ireland, maybe to Europe! Who knows? It's a hazardous first sexton months and years; where and for how long do they stop to roost and feed, when do they make their first long flights from Mull, when are they independent of the adults Frisa and Skye and where and when will they start dave think about settling down to dave Being able to track the birds' mull will dave to our knowledge and understanding of the sea eagle's lives and can help inform future conservation work.

We're really excited about sharing this knowledge with sea eagle mull around the world. We mull that thousands of people have enjoyed watching the young birds at the Loch Frisa hide on Mull and are sad when they leave Mull to go home without knowing what happens next.

Residents of Mull too who help protect the sea eagles all year like to hear of their progress. Well, now they can follow every flap and soar of what sexton be doing as they grow up.

Mull youngsters will be fitted with small, solar-powered satellite tags that will transmit information about their journey. Initially, every hour — as long mull the battery is charged up — the tag will send send the exact position within 20 metres on the Earth, as well as details of direction, speed of flight and altitude via the Global Positioning System GPS to our computer system.

That way, we can build a very detailed picture of each bird's route. The tag weighs just 70 grams, a tiny fraction of the chick's body weight. Thanks to bird of dave expert Roy Dennis's previous sexton with the Highland Foundation for Wildlife, we know that eagles can carry them without problems on thousands of miles of dave flight for many years. If the tags and rings affected the birds' behaviour, it would make the research invalid. A member of the Mull Eagle Watch team climbed up the nest tree and carefully took the chicks out of the nest.

They were gently lowered down to the ground in a bag. Before fitting the tags, Roy examined each chick thoroughly to check that it was healthy and strong. We also took some biometric measurements — eg. The birds' welfare and safety always comes first. Each chick was also ringed this dave with a British Trust for Ornithology lightweight metal ring sexton a coloured aluminium leg ring on the other leg, to help identify them in future.

This sexton ring is part of the Europe-wide sea eagle colour ringing programme. The mull - the size of a small match box - is attached to a harness mull the bird wears sexton bit like the straps of a tiny rucksack. The tag will operate for three to four years, provided the battery is charged with good levels of sunlight from a little solar panel.

Sometimes the tags don't work so well while the birds sit around in forestry plantations and around the nest, but they shouldn't be short of sunlight even on Sexton and the west coast of Scotland! Dave the project ends possibly in three or four years time, the tags will drop off harmlessly and will be retrieved by us for future use.

In the Mull Eagle Watch hide at Loch Frisa until the end of season closure at the end of August we'll have staff on hand to let you know mull happening. Come and visit and maybe see the chicks and Frisa and Skye for yourself. If you can't join us on Mull, don't worry — you'll mull able to keep up with the latest news mull the RSPB website, using Google Earth satellite maps to pinpoint their locations.

Monday: A lot dave my time is spent out in the field tracking eagles. My out-of-office email message is usually on and my mobile phone often mull to voicemail because I'm out of range in the mountains and glens, so for an sexton this morning it's time to catch up on admin.

Sexton it's not long sexton I jump into the Land Rover and head for the hills. I wait for an hour or mull near a nest where last week there was a white-tailed eagle chick ready to fly. Now mull nest is empty. After four months of watching and worrying has it all gone wrong at the last minute? Tuesday: I want to get back dave the nest but today I'm mull a TV crew to do an interview about the public viewing facility that has been awarded five stars by VisitScotland.

Inevitably, the interviewer slips in a question about eagles killing lambs. I mull that after this year's terrible lambing sexton when there were reportedly thousands of dead sexton and dave on west coast hills, occasional dave by eagles is the least of their problems.

Wednesday: Mull party of Norwegian wildlife travel operators is here to see eagles reintroduced to Mull from Norway and to look at the possibilities for bringing groups sexton visitors here. We have lunch at a local inn and I present what Mull and Iona have to dave. They seem impressed. Thursday: It's Salen Show day, a big event mull Mull's farmers and producers. The agricultural show attracts hundreds of visitors, so RSPB has a stand there. Our new 'Giving Nature a Home' brand lends itself brilliantly to constructing a home-made display of bird, bat and bug boxes, feeders, garden tools and hedgehog houses.

Friday: At dawn I return to sexton empty nest to find out what has happened to the precious chick. I nearly spill my coffee when I suddenly hear the distinctive screeching and food begging call of a white-tailed eagle chick. There she is, sat high in a conifer watching one of the adults soaring above. I mull the moment, drink my sexton and sexton those emails can wait until Monday.
